What is the Registration Program?
Schools and clusters can now access DET teachers and courses on a fee-for-service basis, for students who would benefit from flexible delivery.
Typically, students are registered on a part-time basis, eg 0.6 with DET, with the student’s school providing 0.4 support for transition, social work or certain subjects eg cooking, HPE or ICT.
The service is available to any school and cluster within the Department of Education.
What is the difference between a Registration and an enrolment at DET?
DET enrolled students are those who are ill, travelling, pregnant, isolated or who are within the exceptional circumstances category. These students usually receive a full educational program and consider DET to be their school.
Registered students continue their enrolment in the school that arranges their registration. They access DET teachers and courses as part of their individual education program.

How does it work?
- an initial phone conversation or email from the school indicates that they wish to access the program
- if flexible delivery is suitable, DET accepts a provisional enrolment
- DET staff travel to meet with school staff, the student and, importantly, key family members
- a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is drafted which clearly outlines the roles and responsibilities of all participants
- reviews of the MOU occur regularly (following a 6 week assessment of the initial enrolment)
- DET staff provide assessment and reporting information, on request, to fit into the school’s reporting calendar
- the school/cluster is invoiced by Finance, Facilities and Business Support
What can happen?
Stuart (Yr 9)
Stuart has trouble attending school regularly due to traumatic family circumstances and intense shyness. He wants to be a chef.
Registered at DET for 2 terms at 0.7 FTE, Stuart will study English, Maths, Science, SOSE and Art. He will attend his school for the remaining 0.3 FTE for several sessions of cooking each week, as well as some time with the social worker and Pathway Planning officer.
Karen (Yr 10)
Karen has ‘had it’ with school and has been letting everyone know – no work, lots of fights and regularly taking off from school.
She’s keen to be a hairdresser, and knows college is her way forward, but these last few months have been tough. Registered with DET 0.4 FTE, Karen is completing the work at home or in her school library. Her school provides transition advice, art classes and ICT and keeps her connected through a role in the school play. Year 11 at this stage, looks possible!
