Education in Hospital

The schoolroom

A qualified teacher works in the schoolroom at the Royal Hobart Hospital and Launceston General Hospital each morning, Monday to Friday, 9-12.

During this time, school-aged patients can access school work, craft activities, puzzles, games, books and computers.

Assistance can be given with school work the student has brought to hospital.

The School-Connect Service will:

  • help you keep in touch with your school
  • inform the school about key dates or support requirements
  • give you school work to do at home
  • help you keep in touch with friends at school
  • help you with the getting-back-to-school process

This service is available:

  • to all K-10 students
  • in any Tasmanian hospital
  • Monday to Friday
  • 8.30am to 4.00pm

Enrolment at Distance Education Tasmania (DET)

School-aged patients, K-10, who stay in hospital for 4 weeks or more, or who have a long recuperation period at home, can be enrolled at DET, either full time or part ime, until they are able to return to their own school. DET enrolment enables students to negotiate an individual education program with a DET teacher.
